Known for having a laugh and a joke at every opportunity has earned Don Elgin the reputation for being a bit of a larrikin. The below the knee amputee grew up in Tocumwal, Victoria and was a keen swimmer and footballer, playing with his four siblings.
Don has represented Australia in the pentathlon, shot put and discus events since 1994, where he competed at the World Championships in Berlin, winning a gold medal. Since then, Don’s achievements include a silver at the 2002 World Championships in France, a bronze at the 2000 Sydney Paralympic Games, two bronze medals for pentathlon and 4×100m as well as a silver in the 4×400m at Athens in 2004.
On top of Don’s achievements in the sporting world, he works as a communications consultant for Australia Post and is the father of three girls. With their support and his determination, Don is aiming to be the best below the knee amputee in the world, when he competes at Beijing.
