Lindy is vision impaired: she has a degenerative eye condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa and she has been legally blind since 1996.
Lindy was a fiercely competitive triathlete and a successful triathlon coach but when her eyesight deteriorated she had to give up competitive cycling and coaching. For many, this would have meant the end of her involvement and enjoyment of cycling; but not for Lindy. In 1999 she rediscovered the joy of cycling on a Tandem bike.
Lindy was determined to fulfil her dream of representing Australia and to become the best in the world. To have the best possible chance for gold in Athens, Lindy created the Athens Express Tandem Cycling Team which comprised of two pilots. Janelle Lindsay competed with Lindy in the sprints and kilo event and Toireasa Gallagher rode with Lindy in the pursuit and road races. It was a successful Games for the team with Lindy winning one gold, two silvers and one bronze medal!
Toireasa is now Lindy’s sole pilot. An accomplished individual rider who has numerous Australian titles, to her own name, Toireasa had previously won 3 gold and 2 silver medals at the 2002 IPC World Cycling Championships as a pilot for Aussie cyclist Sarnya Parker.
Two gold medals at the 2006 IPC World Cycling Championships for Lindy and Toireasa show that they are still on top and their focus is now turned to winning more Paralympic titles in Beijing.
