Matthew Cameron

Matthew Cameron says that he is always up for a challenge and will have a go at any sport no matter what. As he prepares for a grand total of four events in the Beijing Paralympics, it is certainly difficult to argue with him.

Matthew is looking for success in the 100m, 200m and 400m sprints and will also form part of the 4×100m relay team. He is in some good form on the track, making the finals in all three distances at the 2007 Swiss Racing Series in Ibach, Switzerland. Matthew has always used a wheelchair after being born with popliteal pterygium syndrome, a physical disability that doesn’t allow him to stand.

Apart from athletics, Matthew has also enjoyed success with the Australian under 20 years wheelchair basketball team. Recognition for his sporting achievements has come at a regular rate. Matthew participated in the Sydney 2000 Olympic torch relay and in 2003 he was Townsville’s Australian sportsperson of the year.

Matthew has also gained two certificates from the Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE, one for business and the other for computer aided drafting. In his spare time, he likes nothing more than to work his way through a steady stream of exciting new games on his xbox. The games may just get shelved, though, as his first Paralympic Games draws closer each day.
