Its been a rapid rise to the top of the LC1 class for cyclist Michael Gallagher.
Michael was born in Scotland and immigrated to Australia in 1983, when he was 5 years old. An accident at birth resulted erbs palsy (nerve damage) to Michaels right shoulder which effects the movement and strength in his right arm.
Michael started riding a racing bike in 2004 and first competed for Australia at the European Championships in August 2005. He made rapid improvements following these championships, as he became a dual world champion and world record holder in only 12 months!
Away from the bike, Michael is the owner of a construction business. This allows him to be flexible and juggle his training commitments, which will see him ride about 600-700 kilometres per week!
When asked what his goals are Michael says, “To compete in the Beijing Paralympic Games and to improve on the current world records on the track”. Then he adds “and to be the best cyclist and person that I can be.”
