Named three times in the Women’s National Wheelchair Basketball League All Star Five (2004, 2006 and 2007) Tina McKenzie is a world-class wheelchair basketballer. In 2000 she was a reserve player for the Australian Paralympic team, and then in 2002 she won bronze with her team at the World Cup. A highlight for Tina came in her second Paralympic campaign, where she won a silver medal at the 2004 Athens Paralympic Games.
Fourth was the popular position for Tina in season 2006, finishing in that position with the Australian Gliders at the Gold Cup in Amsterdam and the John Little tournament in the USA. She also finished third with the Knox Raiders in the Women’s National Wheelchair Basketball League.
Also in 2006, Tina was a member of the Australian Gliders that competed at the Osaka Friendship Games and won silver. The tempo for the team has now lifted, with the focus on the Gliders preparation to win the elusive Paralympic gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games. In 2007, the Gliders won their Paralympic qualifier, beating Japan and New Zealand. They then competed in the Four Nations Tournament, only narrowly finishing second to Germany.
Tina is currently studying a Bachelor of Arts and Diploma of Education at Macquarie University. She received the Chancellors Award for academic and sporting excellence in 2005 and 2006, which is one of the most prestigious awards at Macquarie University and has also been nominated for the Australian University Sports Athlete of the Year.
