The youngest member of the Australian Paralympic Winter Team, 20-year-old alpine skier Toby Kane competes in Downhill, Super-G, Giant Slalom and Slalom, and is currently ranked 2nd in the world in Super-G and 3rd in Giant Slalom. A single below knee amputee following a car accident at the age of two, Toby was talent-spotted skiing on the Smiggins snowfields when he was eight. Toby began travelling with the development squad at the age of 11 after being persuaded to attend a Talent Identification Camp. He subsequently graduated to training with the Australian Paralympic Winter Squad.
In early 2006, while competing at the Meridian Cup Nor Am in the USA, Toby achieved his first international win in the Slalom event. Competing at his first Paralympic Games in Torino in 2006, Toby won Bronze in the Super-G (Men’s Standing Event) and finished 9th in the Downhill event.
At the Closing Ceremony of the Torino Winter Paralympics Toby was given the honour of team flag bearer by retiring Winter Paralympic great Michael Milton.
Toby is currently studying medical science at The University of Sydney and continuing his training for Vancouver 2010.
